EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) intensives use the same techniques of a regular weekly EMDR session, done in an extended period of time over 3-6 hours in one day instead of over several weeks in 50-60 minute increments. EMDR Intensives differ in length of time as well as the need to be very thoughtful of the goals one hopes to accomplish in therapy.
Intensive EMDR sessions are not appropriate for all situations or clients.
This way of working with your system will lead to deeper, more focused and faster healing. Reducing your symptoms is the number one priority. In weekly therapy sessions time is spent checking in, getting into the deeper work, and then time is needed to close the session. In a weekly 50-60 minute session, you might have 30-40 minutes of processing time. An extended session allows for much more processing time without starting and stopping, a 3-hour intensive could be about 2.5 hours of processing, the equivalent of 4-5 one-hour weekly sessions. So your healing comes faster.
Because of the reasons listed above, Intensive EMDR sessions ultimately save you time and money as well. You are doing the same amount of therapy in a condensed period of time.
If you have a busy schedule, instead of trying to fit therapy into your life weekly, you can focus on finding one day to get weeks of therapy done at one time, leaving you more time for other important things in your life.
If you are in on-going therapy, but have a traumatic event that seems to be stuck in your system, or happened recently, and you want to accelerate your healing of that event, you can do an intensive session, and then continue to work with your current therapist for ongoing support.
